The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) defines Nutritional Therapy as
“the application of nutrition and health science to enable individuals to maximise their health potential.”
Nutritional Therapists are trained to understand nutritional imbalances and how these might lead to unwanted symptoms and health concerns. An evidence based, personalised approach is taken to assess each client’s individual needs and to encourage any necessary dietary and lifestyle changes.
Many Nutritional Therapists follow the functional medicine method, considering all aspects contributing to a client’s health, including medical history, family medical history, food intake, sleep patterns, stress levels and more, to find a root cause for any issues. Diet, supplement and lifestyle recommendations are then used to address any imbalances. If necessary, functional testing is used to further explore and identify the root cause of any symptoms.
Tests most commonly used include:
stool tests for digestive health
blood, saliva and urine tests for hormone levels
blood and urine tests for vitamin and mineral status
swab tests for oral and vaginal microbiome
Performing these checks provides us with the opportunity to find out what is going on inside your body and may reveal a clearer path for us to follow.
